9 Days
The Chadar Trek is a remarkable 9-day adventure set in the heart of the Indian Himalayas, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience of trekking over the frozen Zanskar River during the harsh winter months. The journey begins in Leh, located at 3,500 meters, with two initial days dedicated to acclimatization, medical check-ups, and essential gear checks. These days are crucial not only to adjust to the high-altitude conditions but also to ensure trekkers meet the safety requirements mandated by the local authorities. From Leh, the expedition proceeds to Shingra Koma, the trek’s starting point, and then continues on foot over the thick sheet of ice, affectionately called the “Chadar.”
Throughout the trek, participants cover a total walking distance of approximately 60 kilometers, navigating surreal landscapes of frozen waterfalls, towering cliffs, and deep gorges. Key stopovers include Tsomo Paldar, the natural shelter of Tibb Cave, and the iconic Nerak village, known for its majestic frozen waterfall and extreme cold temperatures. The trek back follows the same route, providing a new view of the constantly changing ice formations. A buffer day is built into the itinerary to accommodate potential weather delays, ensuring the safety and flexibility of the journey. Concluding in Leh, the Chadar Trek leaves adventurers with unforgettable memories of traversing one of the most stunning and challenging winter trails in the world.
